Blogging For Beginners: “What is the best way to get people to comment and interact with me on my blog?”

 by Kary Rogney

Remember as you create awesome content, it’s also important to ask insightful questions to engage your readers. Do your best to keep the dialog open with your readers by commenting back. There is a great WordPress Plugin you can use to nest your comments under each commentator. It’s called WordPress Thread Comment. (see my post on it)

In the past with my WordPress theme, if I wanted to comment back my comment would end up at the bottom of the comments and not connected with the comment I wanted to respond to. Not any more. I use the Empowered Theme and nestles right with the person I want to reply to. This builds my direct relationship with that person and encourages them to come back for more interaction. If you’re not blogging with the Empowered Theme and you’re having issues like I was then you’ll definitely like this WP plugin.

CommentLuv is also a fantastic plugin to allow your commentators to leave a link back to their blog after their signature line in their comment on your blog. I see it as a kind thank you gesture or motivator to be a regular commentator. The benefit to them is potential traffic to their blog and it also gives them a back link which is valuable for Search Engine Optimization (SEO), as Google looks at how many backlinks are connected to blogs to determine their Page Ranking, etc…

As you visit blogs and comment on the content you want to be able to leave your picture behind. That’s called your Gravatar. You can go to http://gravatar.com and quickly upload a picture to be placed with your blog comments around the web. Make sure it’s the same e-mail that you’re using within the General Settings of your blog so that everything links up neatly.

How to set up your Gravatar.

Blogging is a social ‘sport’ so don’t neglect these fundamentals.

21 Comments and Pings on Blogging For Beginners: “What is the best way to get people to comment and interact with me on my blog?”

  • Posted by Heather C Stephens on September 01, 2010 at 6:48 am

    Hi Kary,

I enjoyed your post…thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. I’m glad I found the thread comment plugin.

Do you have a plugin you recommend to send an email with your reply to someone’s comment to them? I like when other blogs let me know that my comment has been replied to, and I’m not sure how to do that on my own blog.

You’re right, commentluv has helped me get more comments on my blog and I’ve also found that making my blog a dofollow blog has helped me to reward my readers who have commented on my blog with some backlinks. This encourages commenting as well.

    Thanks for the great post!

    Hi Kary,

Thank you for the information – I went ahead and installed the Comment Thread on my blog. Looking forward to seeing it work out. :)

I look forward to going through some other posts of yours as I have been diving into setting up all of my blogs, social media contacts, etc the last month or so. I am going through Katie Freiling’s Blog Mastery so I’ve seen your name pop up here and there.

    Thanks again!

    Hey Kary,
Great info as always. I do like the CommentLuv plugin, works great!

You’ve got so much content on your site it will take me a “month of sundays” to get through it all.

    Blessings,

    Hey Kary,

I am fortunate to have a theme that automatically links my reply to a person right there with their comment.

I believe strongly in leaving comments for people, even after clicking on the Tweet or Facebook link to forward the article or video. I think it’s just good business to show the person that took the time to create the post that you appreciate them bringing you the valuable information.

    Great Reminder!

    Thank you again,

    Kary,

Thanks for the tip, I can see how beneficial it would be to link the response comment right back to the thread of the person responding. This allows for a direct on the spot response. I will be using this for sure.

Hey Kary – some great nuggets of info here.

Firstly with the Gravatars – I am extremely mindful of approving comments from people who DON’T have a gravatar simply because of all the spam that I get. And have noticed that spammers are getting a lot sneakier with the way they are spamming :-) It is so important to use a Gravatar so not only the owner of the site can see who you are but also anyone in the community who sees your comments and wants to know more about you.

And commentluv… well what can I say other than it is a fabulous way to thank and reward your commentators for stopping by!

One thing I would like to see more of in the community is real depth to people’s comments, will be writing a post on that today because it is something I am passionate about!

    cheers

As you can see I haven’t used the Gravatar. I now see how easy it will be to set up, hopefully next week I’ll follow your steps and get it done. You’ve made it very simple thank you.

    Hi Kary,

Great post with valuable tips. That’s why I keep reading your blog and your emails. You give great value and it is much appreciated.

Atahualpa theme seems to be one of the themes with comment nesting built in.

    All the best,

    Alan

    • Posted by Kary Rogney on September 04, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Yes, Alan. There are a few free themes that don’t have
comment nesting issues. I can’t believe the one I paid
for did! hahaha Live and learn.

      Hi Jennifer,
So glad you enjoyed the tips. There are so many great
ways to connect with people online. Unfortunately it’s
mostly a bunch of ‘static’ to sift through…
      Have a fantastic day!

Hey Kary, great post. It took me ages to find out about Gravatar but i’m glad I did. It looks a lot more professional when leaving a comment on somebody’s blog. As for commentluv, there’s not much I can add about that. If there is anyone that doesn’t have it, get it now! It’s a great way of rewarding people for taking the time to post a comment and giving value to others is what it’s all about :-)

    • Posted by Kary Rogney on September 04, 2010 at 2:20 pm

WordPress Thread Comment is indeed excellent in engaging our readers. However, it is also important to reply to those who have commented, otherwise they won’t engage themselves back. :-)

    • Posted by Kary Rogney on October 04, 2010 at 8:46 pm

      Hi Walter,
That is absolutely true. Sometimes I find that to be one of the
hardest things to keep up with… Especially if you have a really
      busy blog.
