Social proof is powerful and not something to overlook as a new blogger. When people land on a website with hundreds of people in a Google Friend Connect Box or in a Facebook Fan Page Box for you, it immediately gives you more credibility.
It’s kind of like a guest book at a bed and breakfast. If you take a look at it and it’s full with lots of messages then you feel confident that you’re making the right decision to be there. The same holds true for these side bar widgets that you can install in your blog.
Like me you’ve probably visited blogs that look and ‘feel’ like a ghost town, right? There are only 3-4 people in their Google Friend Connect box and you’re thinking that it’s probably that blogger’s spouse, mom, and brother helping them out… The one sure way to get yours rockin’ and rollin’ is to get out there and join other people’s on their blogs, make friends with other bloggers, and learn how to drive traffic to your site through strategic syndication alliances (your tribe).
Here’s how you add the Google Friend Connect… essentially you just set up a free account, click on ‘members gadgets’ and copy and paste the html code into a ‘Text’ widget on your blog… (Go to ‘widgets’, drag and drop the word ‘text’ over the right sidebar, copy and paste html code with any title you wish).
It’s that simple. There are many features with these that are extremely powerful, but for now get them up on your blog and start meeting the people that are taking the time to say, “Hi, I was here.”
Today’s very short video:
BONUS #1: Setting Up Google Friend Connect
BONUS #2: Setting Up Facebook Fan Page
Coming up we will look at how to create a comment friendly environment… It’s about growing a community right on your blog.
Yours in support and mastery,
PS Some of these people that are on my Google Friend Connect and Facebook Fan Pages have quickly become some of my very best friends in my entire life. Hard to believe, I know… but true! I speak with many of them daily or several times per week. If it weren’t for having a blog, that definitely would not be the case. This is where we hang out too… http://empoweredtribe.com

35 Comments and Pings on Blogging For Beginners: “How Do I Create Social Proof Quickly When I’m A New Blogger?”
Hi Kary,
What you’ve just outlined is crucial for both new and established blogs going forward.
I liken it to being in a new country or city and perusing the cafe strip. The one you end up spending your money in, is the one that has social proof, e.g. the one where people were hanging out!
Entering any place online or offline that has zero diners, followers, fans etc sets off a subconscious alarm that triggers you to move on.
GFC is such a powerful way to build up social proof and online credibility.

Hey Kary
I remember getting started not so long ago and worrying how was I going to establish myself with this “social proof” everyone is talking about. But it didn’t take me long to get started at all, and I have to say that this had a lot to do with all the “tribal community” blogging that I got myself involved in.
If you want social proof you need to earn it, I did this by networking, syndicating, reciprocating and just engaging with my readers to find out what it was that I was creating with my content that people were coming to my blog for. It didn’t happen over night but it certainly is on its way now!
Thanks for sharing!
cheers

Hi Kary,
Thank you for the informative videos… I have a Facebook Business page already, but not a Google Friend connect! Considering the idea of social proof, would you highly recommend the Google Friend connect when I already have the Facebook Business page, Twitter Feed, and the Network Blogs, plus Top Commentators which show a decent amount of comments, etc on my blog?
It’s too bad that a person cannot put a Facebook Group page on the sidebar… if I can, please let me know because I did not see a place to get the code for the page!
Thanks again Kary,

Hey John,
I don’t know of a way to add a FB group to a WP sidebar.
Doesn’t meet it’s not possible. “Google it…” lol
You could always take a screen shot of it and put
it in your sidebar as a graphic and link out to it.
Have fun!
Kary
Hi Again Kary,
Awesome Idea… I will consider doing that!
Thank You,
John Engle
.-= John Engle´s last blog ..6 Amazing Tips for Overcoming Writer’s Block! =-.
Hey Kary,
This subject hangs a lot of people up so I’m glad that someone finally addressed it and literally squashed it. I think the biggest thing that most people need to realize is that every time you read blog posts and find ways to advance your education you become more valuable. Thus, you have more value to offer.
Even knowing simple things such as setting up lead capture pages, auto-responder message series etc. are things that to this day not a lot of people know about. I tell my team all the time that whenever they learn something that can move their businesses forward to immediately share it with their team so that the new people can learn it and begin to apply it.
Great stuff as always Kary! Keep up the excellent work

Hi Kary,
great step-by-step videos. Some blogs look like ghost blogs, that’s true. I believe people think that they can just put something out there and the magic will happen. The magic will happen in social media, but only if we work social media and if we don’t expect that social media does the whole work for us. So after installing these widgets, it’s very important to fill them with life.
Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Take care
