Content Is “King”: Learn The Best Techniques For Creating Great Content

 by Kary Rogney

Is your content boring people to tears and driving away business?

Writing good quality content is probably one of THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILLS you can master for you online business. You can drive traffic all day long to any website, but if the content is not appealing your readers will not stick around, and worse… they will not BUY FROM YOU.

Good content is the mechanism that converts readers into followers and followers into buyers. By following a couple of steps you can have good content that people will not only want to read, but will want to share with their readers.

You must churn out HOT new content on a regular basis! Because of fierce competition for eyes, you MUST stand out among the sea of bloggers and marketers online. Leading with valuable content needs to be your #1 priority!

Find your target audience.
I know what you’re saying… “What does this have to do with good quality content?” My answer… EVERYTHING. You need to have the right readers for your content, and you need to keep your reader’s wants and needs in mind when writing.

Research.
Do a search in Google and your favorite social sites and forums. Look at what others are writing about. Look at how they are writing. Look for ideas concepts writing styles. There may be a lot of information on the topic you want to write about and that’s ok. In fact it could be a good thing, because now you’re going to put your spin on it.

A bold eye catching title.
This is your first “hook” to get your readers to look further into your content. Again keep your readers in mind. Think like they do. What would draw your attention?

Compelling body.
Each sentence needs to lead to the next and each paragraph needs to lead to the next. Keep the flow going. When you re-read it does it make sense? Is there anything where someone would say… “So what.” If so then take it out.

Your writing can be about things that are educational, entertaining, enlightening, encouraging, and inspiring. If you keep this in mind and change up what you write about, people will come back for more over and over again!

You’ll quickly know whether your content is ‘gelling’ with your readers, because you’ll get dozens and dozens of comments in the first couple of days when a new post goes live.

Strong close.
Wrap up your article or story with an overview of what you just told them. Don’t just leave it hanging. There’s nothing worse than allowing your reader to think they just wasted their time reading your stuff.

Call to action.
An article worth it’s weight will draw people in and give them something of value for their time. So ask them to do something for you. You can have them leave a comment, post your article to their social networks, and share it with their friends. This is where most people miss it big time. It’s like leaving money on the table.

It’s also important to ask insightful questions to engage your readers. And do your best to keep the dialog open with them by commenting back. There is a great WordPress Plugin you can use to nest your comments under each commentator. It’s called WordPress Thread Comment.

So now that you have an idea of how to write good content that your audience will want to read, the next thing to do… is.. go do it. Set a target of writing a piece of content every day or at least twice per week. The more you do the easier it becomes.

By being dedicated to putting out the very best possible content every time possible, you may quickly find your self as an ‘A-List’ blogger or have an authority site on your hands!

Yours in support and mastery,
Kary Rogney

    Leaving money on the table.
Yep, I admit. That has been me. Not this time. Today’s post is going to have a call to action that would make General Sherman proud. Thanks Kary!

Right on the money as always, Kary. Content IS king, and people definitely do leave their money on the table with a weak, or god forbid, NO call to action to conclude their posts.

Thanks for another great post! Retweeted!

Your call to action is clarion clear: Go do it!

I had a great eight grade teacher – a man so small he bought his coats in the boys’ department. We were terrified, reverent and adoring. His homework, every night of the year: Go,See,Do.

    Kary,

Thank you for the powerful reminder!
The top three most treasured features of this internet’s piece of real estate are – content, content, content. I agree. I installed the WP Thread Comment plugin recently and really love it.
The visual you give with the sentence ‘leaving money on the table’ is very vivid and accurate. I love it.
Thank you for putting it simply and wisely,

Awesome stuff Kary, this is a great read, getting lost a time or two with the vast topics to write about in the home improvement sector, specifically house painting. This has inspired me getting a few more articles out the door. Have one question: Do you write article, then title tag it with H1,2,3′s or write titles 1st. Tks!

    • Posted by Kary Rogney on April 13, 2010 at 3:23 pm

A lot of times I think of an idea and write the title at the beginning. Sometimes the title changes and other times I’m inspired at the end of writing the post. I just depends… Clear as mud? LOL
      Thanks, Cal.

    Hey Kary,

Thanks for the great tips. I never thought of creating not so good content as leaving money on the table. I will certainly apply your tips to my future posts.

    Awesome advice Kary!
Lots of great nuggets in here to apply to my posts. It is so important to see what others are writing about because that means that your audience wants to hear about it too. The biggest thing is putting your own spin on it like you said, because your followers want to see your opinion and your personality. Content IS King and the most important part about making a blog great.

    Thanks Kary!! :)

I have learned so much from you and the empowered tribe about content creation ~ and have to say that your comment that not having a Call to Action is leaving money on the table is right on. If you’ve kept their attention to the end, then lead them somewhere! People are looking to you for inspiration and guidance, so be sure to give it to them or they will surely find it somewhere else!

Thanks for laying this out so clearly, Kary!

This is a great post to put up. I think alot of people are kind of curious as to how to go about creating great content.

I think that alot of people are nervous that they don’t know enough to create great content but really if you present the smallest thing in the ways you suggested, it can be really successful!

Great information Kary, often times it takes a little longer to put up something worth while than it is to slap a post up for the sake of having content but it doesn’t serve at all. Great outline. Thanks.
