10 Tips for Giving Your Writing Authority (Blogging For Beginners)

Experts generate their reputation through research, exposition and analysis. They are worthy of citation and trust from others within their field both on and offline. How do you write authoritatively? Here are ten successful techniques.

1. Do your best

As a reader, you search for immersion in what you’re reading. As a writer, you want your readers to follow your work from beginning to end. Crafting the best words takes time. Edit your work. Before submitting your piece, make sure that it has been proofread one last time for improper word usage and grammatical errors.

2. Be confident

Authorities remove words like ‘seem’ and ‘hope to’ from their work. They choose the right expression for the meaning that they wish to convey. Replace ‘because of’ with action words. ‘I am angry because of traffic,’ becomes ‘Traffic infuriates me.’ Passive voices need to be eliminated.

3. Use quotes

Quotes lay the foundation of the author’s work for the reader. The authority takes the time to find a quote which perfectly fits the situation as well as shows humility in placing others’ work within the body of their piece.

4. Write sparingly

Use as many words as you need to make the point, but no more. Word counts are not as important as expressing your point as clearly and concisely as possible. Your work should have nothing out of place like the newest Ferrari. Authorities know how to stay on topic and can convey their meaning with as few words as possible.

5. Use personal stories

You are the expert and have a library of stories to tell. Engaging your readers with personal anecdotes enables them to develop a rapport with you. These stories should be well positioned and thought provoking, emphasizing the primary points of your work.

6. Metaphors and similes

Metaphors and similes engage your readers and illustrate your salient points. By engaging your reader’s minds, you further reveal your understanding of their needs and situations. With metaphors and similes, you create visualizations which are inherently more potent than the mere discussion of facts and figures.

7. Statistics

Statistics will add to the air of authority. They show that you took the time to research your work and come up with a fact or figure that is relevant and enticing. Do not make something up while you search for the most outlandish statistics to cite. Using statistics increases your authority.

8. Focus on benefits

Readers want to get something out of your work, be it entertainment or information. Keep this fact ever-present within your mind, using every available word to convey something of value to your reader. Your goal is to keep your reader riveted from the catchy headline to the call to action.

9. How To lists

Use a how to list whenever possible. Readers are looking for the quick and easy answers, and a concise how to list can meet those needs. Take the reader by the hand and lead them into understanding. For marketing purposes, add a catchy name to your list of steps: make it the ‘X’ plan or the ‘Y’ project.

10. Write about what you know

You can tell when another author’s knowledge is lacking. Authorities in the field do what they are writing about and possess experiential knowledge of what works and what doesn’t. The experts can casually make comparisons to historical events or create parallels to different fields.

Writing with authority comes with practice and patience. Read works which you consider to be authoritative within your fields of interest and emulate their style. Keep writing, and you will cultivate your reader’s trust. Soon, you will be cited in others’ works and have authors in your field coming to you for advice.

A New Trend In Micro-Content Blogging?

Today is the first in what I’d like to say is going to be a very exciting transition for my blog’s purpose… In the past I’ve strictly posted my own original writing and content approximately once per week.

I’ve recently been inspired and handed a powerful and fun technique of sharing short reviews and recommendations of other top blogger content that I run across.

I’ll post my thoughts and insights about their content and also encourage you to follow the link I provide to go get “the rest of the story” for yourself.

By doing this I will have steady, new and short posts to pass on to you. I’ll still be creating my own original content regularly, too. And I’ll be drawing from the incredible minds of people I call friends, colleagues, tribe members, and mentors.

So head over the ScottScales.com and check out his post that started me on this new journey of blogging. His post is called “Does Size Really Matter? Discover The Real Story So You Don’t Come Up Short.” If that does have you curious, I don’t know what will. LOL

Til Next Time My Friends,

Content Is “King”: Learn The Best Techniques For Creating Great Content

Is your content boring people to tears and driving away business?

Writing good quality content is probably one of THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILLS you can master for you online business. You can drive traffic all day long to any website, but if the content is not appealing your readers will not stick around, and worse… they will not BUY FROM YOU.

Good content is the mechanism that converts readers into followers and followers into buyers. By following a couple of steps you can have good content that people will not only want to read, but will want to share with their readers.

You must churn out HOT new content on a regular basis! Because of fierce competition for eyes, you MUST stand out among the sea of bloggers and marketers online. Leading with valuable content needs to be your #1 priority!

Find your target audience.
I know what you’re saying… “What does this have to do with good quality content?” My answer… EVERYTHING. You need to have the right readers for your content, and you need to keep your reader’s wants and needs in mind when writing.

Research.
Do a search in Google and your favorite social sites and forums. Look at what others are writing about. Look at how they are writing. Look for ideas concepts writing styles. There may be a lot of information on the topic you want to write about and that’s ok. In fact it could be a good thing, because now you’re going to put your spin on it.

A bold eye catching title.
This is your first “hook” to get your readers to look further into your content. Again keep your readers in mind. Think like they do. What would draw your attention?

Compelling body.
Each sentence needs to lead to the next and each paragraph needs to lead to the next. Keep the flow going. When you re-read it does it make sense? Is there anything where someone would say… “So what.” If so then take it out.

Your writing can be about things that are educational, entertaining, enlightening, encouraging, and inspiring. If you keep this in mind and change up what you write about, people will come back for more over and over again!

You’ll quickly know whether your content is ‘gelling’ with your readers, because you’ll get dozens and dozens of comments in the first couple of days when a new post goes live.

Strong close.
Wrap up your article or story with an overview of what you just told them. Don’t just leave it hanging. There’s nothing worse than allowing your reader to think they just wasted their time reading your stuff.

Call to action.
An article worth it’s weight will draw people in and give them something of value for their time. So ask them to do something for you. You can have them leave a comment, post your article to their social networks, and share it with their friends. This is where most people miss it big time. It’s like leaving money on the table.

It’s also important to ask insightful questions to engage your readers. And do your best to keep the dialog open with them by commenting back. There is a great WordPress Plugin you can use to nest your comments under each commentator. It’s called WordPress Thread Comment.

So now that you have an idea of how to write good content that your audience will want to read, the next thing to do… is.. go do it. Set a target of writing a piece of content every day or at least twice per week. The more you do the easier it becomes.

By being dedicated to putting out the very best possible content every time possible, you may quickly find your self as an ‘A-List’ blogger or have an authority site on your hands!

Yours in support and mastery,
Kary Rogney
